Epic Games announced today that Unreal Engine 4, the newest iteration of the company's flagship engine, is now free. For everybody. Yes, you've read that right.
As of today, anybody who wishes to work on Unreal Engine 4 can do so for free. Users who decide to use the engine get access to everything: all the tools, platforms, source code, sample content, etc. The engine comes bundled with a large number of video tutorials and documentation as well as ready-made game templates, samples, and content to make starting out easier. What's more, all future updates will be provided free of charge.
Sounds too good to be true? Well, there is a small catch. There is a 5% royalty fee for commercially released games and applications. However, it only applies to products that have generated over $3,000 in gross revenue per quarter. Other projects such as film, simulation, and visualization will require no royalty fees to be paid.
